The National Navigation Award Scheme is a well-established training programme that helps people learn to navigate using maps and a compass.
It’s a structured, skills-based pathway created by experienced mountain professionals, and trusted by outdoor centres, schools, Duke of Edinburgh groups, and mountain leaders across the UK.
When you complete an NNAS course, you gain a certificate that proves your navigation skills — and gives you the confidence to explore new places safely.

Perfect for: Beginners or anyone who uses digital maps but wants to understand the real thing.
You’ll learn to:
Understand OS maps, symbols, and contours
Plan and follow simple routes
Estimate time and distance
Use a compass for basic navigation
Gain confidence in making decisions outdoors

You’ll learn to:
Navigate in open countryside and away from paths
Take and follow compass bearings
Handle poor visibility
Relocate if you’re unsure where you are
Build confidence in more challenging terrain

Group size: Small and supportive (max 6)
Includes: NNAS Silver certificate upon completion

Perfect for: Runners training for mountain marathons, fell races, ultra events, and anyone who wants to be self-reliant in remote terrain.
You’ll learn to:
Navigate confidently off-path and across open fell
Take accurate compass bearings while moving efficiently
Use contours, re-entrants, ridgelines and spurs to pinpoint your location
Make quick decisions on route choice (direct vs. runnable lines)
Relocate smoothly if you drift off line
Handle poor visibility, bad weather, and featureless terrain
Build the confidence to run more independently in races
